Technical aspects of cables stayed bridges Essay
Technical aspects of cables stayed bridges - Essay Example In simple terms, cable-stayed bridges carry mainly vertical loads that act on the girder. Immediate support for the girder is provided by the stay cables so that the bridge can extend over a long distance. Basically, the structure of a cable-stayed bridge is such that it is constructed of a series of overlapping triangles made up of the tower, the pylon, the girder and the cables, which are usually under axial forces, and are considered flexural and efficient. The cables are always under tension whereas the girder and the pylon are under compression. This report looks at the history of cable stay bridges, examines the configuration and design structure, technical requirements, offers a description of various bridge structures and an analysis of the bridge structures. The report concludes by offering recommendations for stay-cable design, installation and testing. Introduction A first glance at cable-stayed bridges raises some interesting questions from both the public and bridge engi neers, who find them technically challenging and innovative, as well as the architects. The cable-stayed bridges attracted public attention when the Stromsund Bridge in Sweden was completed. ... Basically, the structure of a cable-stayed bridge is such that, it is made up of a series of overlapping triangles, made up of the tower, the pylon, the girder and the cables, which are usually under axial forces, and are usually considered flexural and efficient. The cables are always under tension whereas the girder and the pylon, under compression (Dayaratnam 2000). Overtime, cable-stayed bridges have become very popular in bridge engineering; there are more than seven hundred cable-stayed bridges in the world today. With advancement in technology and architectural design, the length of cable-stayed bridges has significantly increased over the years. For instance, the first major cable-stayed bridge built in 1955, the Stromsund Bridge in Sweden, spanned 183m; in the 1970ââ¬â¢s, the Neuenkamp bridge in Germany spanned 350m and was considered the longest one then until the 1980s when another bridge, the Alex Fraser-Annacis Island bridge, spanned 465m was completed (Denney Pate & Rohleder, Jr., 2008). This was, however, surpassed in 1994 by the Normandie bridge that spanned 856m. Today, the longest span cable-stayd bridge is the Russky Bridge, in Vladivostok, Russia, spanning 1,104m, completed in 2012 (Svensson 2012). Configuration of Cable-Stayed Bridges The concept of cable-stayed bridges as illustrated in Figure 1 was that cable suspension was to be used to replace piers as intermediary support for girder, so that it could withstand the vertical load over a long span or distance (Morgenthal & Yamasaki 2010). As a result, the first cable-stayed bridges spaced stay cables far apart based on the maximum girder strength. The

Reflective Exercise - Essay Example In addition, the reflection would evaluate the emergence and improvement of new skills. Finally, the discourse would stipulate how this learning can be transferred into skills for oneââ¬â¢s future including employability. The course on international marketing provided enriching theoretical perspectives affecting global organizations. The key players were clearly identified; the factors shaping the international business environment were highlighted; the risks and ethical issues were discussed; among a host of other relevant concerns. I realized that managing corporate culture is a skill which every global corporation should learn since culture change is a complex and long process involving coordinated efforts by the head office which is very visible to host branches. While many practitioners and academicians aver that management theories and principles are similar throughout the world, their application varies from one country to another due to varied cultural systems. Others observe that cultural differences make it inappropriate to take management theories and practices from the cultures in which they were developed and apply them to another culture. In addition, I was made more aware that managing diversity should incorporate variables which are critical in operating on a global scale. In designing the organizational structure for international operations, the structure should meet both the strategies of the home office and the requirements of the local market. As such, the structure should be contingency based, taking into account the variables of that particular system at that specific point in time. The most important variables to consider are the firmââ¬â¢s strategy, size, technology, and environment of those countries in which the country operates. Further, I learned that other relevant variables that need to be considered when managing the team in the companyââ¬â¢s operations are: geographic dispersion, time differences, language, culture and

Stock Portfolio :: essays papers
Stock Portfolio When setting up a stock portfolio there are things one should look into. First off, one should know what is currently happening, not only in the stock market, but in the economy as well. Researching stock indexes such as ââ¬Å"The Dowâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"S&P 500â⬠will give you general stock performance. The Dow Jones Industrial Average only tracks 30 large industrial firms in hopes of getting a sense of where the market is heading. The S&P 500, on the other hand, tracks 500 stocks which may give the investor a better overall picture of where the market is going. Which ever the investor may choose to use, the idea is to find out whether stock prices are going up or down. Also important to know is state of the economy. Certain stocks tend to perform better or worse depending on the state of the economy. Knowing which stocks tend to perform well at a given state will help the investor choose which type of stock is best for the given conditions. With that, it is time for the investor set a goal. Is the goal that of short or long term success? Is there a specific rate of return you wish to achieve? Or do you simply wish to come out ahead? Once the goals are put into place it is time for investment strategies. The investors goals will be key in helping plan the strategies for the investor. Now that there are goals in place, it is now time to look at the many investment strategies that will help accomplish the set goals. One of these strategies is known as the buy-and hold-strategy. This strategy involves the investor to purchase a stock and hold on to this stock for many years in hopes that over time the stock price will increase. This method doesnââ¬â¢t require much timing of the market therefore is much less stressful making it a very desirable method. The opposite strategy is known as short term trading. This requires much attention to be paid to the ââ¬Å"Priceâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Volumeâ⬠of the stock, also knowing whether the stock is on an upward or downward trend. Another common strategy is known as short selling. This involves borrowing a stock from a broker at a given price and selling it, in hopes that the stock price will drop from the original price.

Clean Water Crisis
Clean Water Crisis/Scarcity For decades, providing clean water to the masses has been a goal. Even with the ââ¬Å"Millennium Declarationâ⬠, a goal proposed by the United Nations to provide clean water sources to everyone in the world by 2020, many people will go without clean water supplies. Can you imagine living in a region where there are struggles to get a glass of clean water. It seems so distant to us living in modern industrialized America, yet this concept is completely taken for granted in everyday life. We simply forget the means as to how we have gotten this necessity of life delivered to our kitchen sink. This is nonetheless relevant in todayââ¬â¢s world. Unless you are one of the unfortunate countries or regions in which there is limited supplies of water and the water that is present is stagnant or so contaminated with bacteria and other minerals that it literally makes you sick from dysentery by simply drinking one glass. Letsfirst look at the public water supply in area's with scarce resources. With a population of well over 120 million people less than 30% of Nigeria has access to safe drinking water(Nigeria). Ingestion of unsafe drinking water can result in spreadable disease. In fact, in India, 21% of all spreadable disease is due to a lack of safe water, and diarrhea alone causes more than 1,600 deaths daily(India). Worldwide 1 out of every 4 deaths under the age of 5 is due to a water-related disease (water). The niger river which once flowed freely though Africa has been being used to produce hydro-electric power out of the Akosombodam. According to BBC news, Nigeria is dependent on this river and the river is now facing environmental catastrophe as a result of pollutionâ⬠. The United States is affected much less than other parts of the world at this time. Although if we do not change something soon we may end up like some of the worlds less fortunate counties. California has been in a drought since 2006. Our own Lexington reservoir is down to less than 5% due construction of a safer dam (Rogers). We may be in trouble; the reservoir will not gain water levels until we come out of this drought. That's because reservoirs and groundwater are already depleted after two years of drought ââ¬â and because the state's population is much bigger than it was during the last statewide drought in the early 1990s. As the population grows; the demand for water increases. Since 1990 the population has doubled. Yet water usage has increased by 6 times. Many Americans are accustomed to having whatever they want, when they want, at any cost. We need to think about the affects of everything that we do, take a simple shower for example. In a survey taken from 36 people from the ages 15- 55 the average person took 8 showers per week. With an average estimated time of 15 minutes. A low flow shower head can produce as little as about 1. 5 gallons per minute. The legal limit for a company to produce a shower head is 2. 5 gallons per minute, but most companies work around that by having a removable flow restrictor. If this is not put in upon installation a high flow shower head can produce up to 5-7 gallons per minute. So this means of the 36 people surveyed, assuming that they have between the legal limit of 1. 5 and 2. 5 gallons per minute, the total of their usage will be between 336,960 and 561,600 Gallons of water per year. Thatââ¬â¢s over a half million gallons of water for 36 people per year, to take their showers. According to the US Census Bureau as of June 2007 the population of California was 37,700,000, and is still growing(what). This would mean that in 2007 alone California used an unbelievable 470 billion gallons of water to take showers.

Demographic and socio-economic changes effect cities, its economy and ultimately the country as a whole. Changes in demographics tells us if an area is losing or gaining population and may act accordingly to help it survive. As medical field advances, the life span of human increases and these changes can show that the median age of the population is growing. What Is Big Data - 1808 Words
What is Big Data? Big data is often referred to and defined in many different ways.In layman terms, we can interpret it as massive or huge amounts of information which cannot be handled efficiently by the current technologies and softwares. But recent technological advancements like data analytics, and social or media networks allow process, transfer, allocate, measure and represent enormous amounts of data which can also be referred to as Big Data. The way big data is used these days is to gather deep and useful information about peopleââ¬â¢s behaviour and sentiments. According to Katina Michael and Keith Miller - ââ¬Å"Organizations use various analytical techniquesââ¬â from crowdsourcing to genetic algorithms to neural networks to sentimentâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As per our analysis, gathering and processing data/information from online news and social media could give the agencies a lead time for tackling critical health issues. For instance, during a cholera outbreak in Haiti, the government agencies could have got a lead time of two weeks if they had done proper data mining from online media. Another major application could be predictive analytics to flag fraudulent payments. The Fraud detection Systems help in reducing the abuse in real-time and has already prevented over $115 million of fraudulent payments in general. The system deployed by The Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services has already saved three times the actual cost invested for the programââ¬â¢s first year. Big data analytics has always proven useful for defense purposes. According to one of the retrospective analysis, a program called Nexus 7 by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) deployed data scientists to the battlefield during the violent years in Afghanistan War. The data mined through surveillance helped in locating and destroying improvised explosive devices. Another health industry success story was collecting millions of data samples from neonatal intensive care units to determine which newborns were likely to contract potentially fatal infections.
